Advent is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and to the anniversary of Our Lord’s birth on Christmas. Advent wreaths remind us of the meaning of the four weeks of Advent:
- First Sunday (Violet): Focuses on hope and the Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah.
- Second Sunday (Violet): Focuses on preparation and peace, recalling Mary and Joseph's journey and St. John the Baptist's message of repentance.
- Third Sunday/Gaudete (which means “rejoice”) Sunday (Rose/Pink): Focuses on joy, marking that the celebration of Christmas is near.
- Fourth Sunday (Violet): Focuses on love and the final countdown to the Nativity, reflecting on the Annunciation and the angels' message.
