How to Use CCC

How can I use the CCC Podcast?

From this page, you can not only download the app to follow Fr. Mike Schmitz’ Catechism in a Year Podcast, but also have access to unique companion content to the CIY Podcast created by our Ministry which allow you to either use this as helpful collateral if you are going through the program for the first time, or to selectively learn or refresh your understanding of any aspect of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) by:

  • Using the In-Brief Summary button to the left, you can view and print as a companion document, a summary of each month’s Podcasts
  • Using the CIY Calendar .pdf button to the left, see the entire year of podcasts and which topics and portions of the CCC were covered throughout each month
  • Using the “CIY Calendar” button to the left, you can go specifically to any topic and link to the associated Episode that Fr. Schmitz provides an explanation of that part of the Church’s Catechism of the Catholic Church.

What is the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)?

  • If you were to be handed a copy of the Catechism, it would be about as thick as the Bible and may seem unfamiliar not knowing just where to start.
    While reading it may seem overwhelming, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is actually very simple to understand, and can be very useful.
  • The Catechism is arranged in four principal parts, making it easier to find the answers you need:
    • The Sacramental Economy, focusing on the Profession of Faith (the Apostles' Creed)
    • The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (the Sacred Liturgy, and especially the seven sacraments)
    • Life in Christ (including the Ten Commandments)
    • Christian Prayer (including the Lord's Prayer)

 

How can I use the CCC to help learn and share the truth about my Catholic faith?

  • There are several tools available to help you on your journey in faith using the CCC.
    • In January 2023, with Father Mike Schmitz and Ascension Press, the Catechism in a year was launched, making the CCC very accessible and easy to become familiar with. 
      In the following years many podcasting apps including Google, Apple and Hallow have made the CIY available. This is a great place to start!
    • At the same time Blessed Sacrament Parish kicked off a series of monthly Catechism Chats, where we were able to hear more about the doctrine of the Church and have our questions answered.
    • In addition, today, BSP has a tools to help you dig into the CCC on your own.  You can also use these tools to help you track which parts you have studied and which you still need to better understand.

 

Why is it important to read and understand the CCC?

  • You love God and your faith, and have a desire for greater knowledge and understanding of what we Catholics really believe.
  • You are a parent of children who ask questions about your faith, and you may want to be confident in what you are teaching them.
  • You like to be informed about the Church’s position on key topics like abortion and same-sex marriage; for when you share your Faith with friends and family members.
  • In today’s society, Catholics are under attack from the misinformation from the mass media.
    A clearer understanding of your faith, will help you to be better informed about the truth and you will have less need to feel defensive.
